The dangers of wildfires have been felt across the country, especially in California. When wildfires threaten foothill and coastal communities — from Pasadena, Altadena and the Pacific Palisades down to San Diego and Northern California — protecting vulnerable openings is critical, especially where people live and work. Extreme heat radiating from fires can shatter window glass in minutes, allowing windblown embers to enter and ignite a building's interior.
Vanguard Smoke and Fire Curtains provides a direct solution: our mechanically operated, fusible link deployable fire curtain system that offers reliable protection from fires without electrical power. In the past, a similar concept was used to deploy heavy, bulky and intrusive steel shutters to protect windows in wildfire-prone areas. With Vanguard’s new Firemaster Wildfire Curtain, heavy steel shutters are a thing of the past.
Designed specifically for Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones and high-risk exterior openings, whether it be the windows or doors to a workplace, warehouse or residence, our fire curtain barrier system is an innovative, compact and lightweight dependable solution to protecting vulnerable property openings.
The Firemaster Wildfire Curtain utilizes our proprietary A1-rated fire resistant fabric with smoke seals integrated into the curtains side guides and headbox to provide the same protection as outdated steel shutters. Our fire curtain technology is the pinnacle of fire protection and wildfire safety with certified UL10D and UL1784 ratings –– meaning the Firemaster Wildfire Curtain with the fire rated ResQ Window vision panel can protect your buildings openings and can withstand temperatures in excess of 1800ºF for up to 180 minutes, while preventing smoke leakage from the outside.
Since the primary protection and function of the Firemaster Wildfire Curtain is within the curtain fabric and integrated smoke seals, this reliable system is pre-assembled and can be professionally installed by Vanguard factory-trained installer. Furthermore, our unique and proprietary fire curtains have a 2-hour fire rated Res-Q Window vision panel, that is integrated –– a window integrated within the curtain allowing building occupants and fire responders to have visibility during emergencies after curtain deployment.
This reliable, manual and top-of-the-line wildfire safety system can be fitted to any opening vulnerable to fire and smoke within a property including windows, doorways, vents, grilles or large commercial warehouse openings.
Ultimately, the Vanguard Firemaster Wildfire Curtain offers an effective, dependable and modern state-of-the-art solution to property owners to address the dangers of the longstanding wildfire problem, without the need for electricity during emergencies. Through the use of our innovative and proprietary fire curtain technology, property owners get the same level of fire and smoke protection as heavy and bulky steel shutters from the past in the form of a lightweight, compact and aesthetically pleasing curtain that stays out of the way until you need it.
How It Works: Pure Mechanical Reliability
Power grid failures can happen during severe wildfire events. That’s why Vanguard’s Wildfire Curtain operates completely independent of electrical power or motorized controls.
Thermal Fusible Link Activation: When ambient heat hits the trigger threshold of 134ºF (depending on climate configuration), the UL-listed fusible link releases automatically which will activate the drop curtain and seal the building’s vulnerable opening.
Controlled Gravity Descent: An internal mechanical brake ensures a smooth, steady descent (6 to 24 inches per second) to seal the opening and protect inside the building.
Pre-Deployment & Easy Reset: Property owners can also manually drop the curtain before evacuating and resetting the system post-emergency is made easy via manual hand crank.
A Modern Alternative to Heavy Steel Shutters
Traditional coiling steel fire shutters are heavy, bulky, and require massive structural overhead. Vanguard’s fabric curtain system offers a lighter, cleaner alternative without sacrificing safety:
Low-Profile Architectural Design: Encased in a compact headbox with slim side guides, the curtain stays virtually hidden above windows or doorways until activated.
A1 Fire-Rated Fabric & Seals: Built with high-grade, fire-resistant fabric and integrated smoke seals along the side guides to block extreme radiant heat, flames, and ember drive.
Optional ResQ-Window™ Vision Panel: Can be outfitted with a specialized, high-temp translucent vision panel (1832ºF + endurance) so first responders can safely assess fire and smoke conditions on the other side.
Universal Mounting Options: Installs cleanly over stucco, concrete, brick, steel, timber, and cross-laminated timber (CLT).
